India Can-Pack Beverages

Aurangabad, housing seven beer manufacturing units, accounts for nearly 30 per cent of the total beer production in India and hence is seen as a most suitable location for can manufacturers. Since May 2009 Can-Pack India has successfully started supply of cans to the domestic market as well as exporting cans to its overseas clients from the Aurangabad plant. Harshvardhan Jajoo, CEO & President (Can-Pack India) helps us with further details…

What were the objectives behind entering the Indian aluminium beverage can market?
The Indian market is gaining momentum and with the country’s economic growth of 8 % year on year, it is no surprise to anyone that the packaging market is growing at a fast pace. Our objective behind entering into the Indian aluminum beverage can market is to explore India as one of the fastest-growing emerging economies in the world. With a population of over 1 billion people and the advent of consumerism among the burgeoning middle class, India represents an economic opportunity on a gargantuan scale, both as a domestic market and as a global platform.

Isn’t the Indian Beverage Packaging Industry more reliant on Glass or PET?
The Indian packaging industry is currently more reliant on glass or PET. The absence of a local ‘Can’ manufacturer in the country has been the primary reason for this over-reliance on these two mediums of packaging. However, in the beverage industry, one of the highest growths observed in the last few years has been in Cans.

The can consumption has been increasing with almost 20 % year on year growth for the last 3-4 years.

Brief us on the Aurangabad plant. Is Can-Pack concentrating only on the aluminum beverage can market in India?
Can-Pack India currently produces aluminum beverage cans in two sizes 330 ml and 500 ml. The cans manufactured at Can-Pack India are suitable for all types of beverages; the 500 ml can being a big hit in the beer industry. The 330 ml can caters to beer, soft drinks, malt beverages, sparkling water, juices and energy drinks segments.

The packaging solutions are not restricted to only aluminum beverage cans as Can-Pack is exploring the Indian market for recycling of used beverage cans.

What are the latest technologies adopted by Can-Pack?
We have a completely automated line that has a production capacity of 750 million cans annually. Can-Pack uses technologies reducing the emission of harmful substances to the environment – all of our lines are equipped with catalytic oxidizers.

What are the upcoming developments at Can-Pack?
We plan to increase the production capacity from 750 million cans to 1 billion cans per annum in the near future and in the medium term doubling the investment to produce 2 billion cans annually.

Ball Packaging Europe, a subsidiary of Ball Corporation, USA, had planned to enter the Indian beverage can market in 2009 by opening a plant at Aurangabad. The company however has put the plan on hold and has decided to commission its Rs 260-crore beverage can-making plant during the first quarter of 2011.
