Demes Logistics Centralises Its Returnable Packaging Operation

Logistics supplier to the glass and container industry Demes Logistics, part of the DS Smith Group, has centralised its UK operations in Leeds with an initial £250,000 investment in premises in Kirkstall, Leeds.

Demes Logistics, a provider of returnable packaging pooling solutions, invested in the Kirkstall site following the acquisition of ER&GE (UK) in July 2007, which operated from the site.

The company centralised its operations from Clay Cross in Derbyshire and Harlow in Essex.

The Leeds plant manages pools of pallets, layer pads and other packaging assets efficiently for leading brands including Budweiser and Chivas.

Yorkshire regional glass container companies, including Allied, Ardagh and Beatson Clark are also customers.

At the core of the Leeds operation are two massive washing machines that clean plastic layer pads and mains storage tanks where the water is softened and processed to potable standards. Daily swab tests are taken to ensure any bacteria have been eliminated.

Leslie Law, Demes quality and customer services manager, said: `Leeds' central location, its major road and rail links make it ideal for servicing UK companies and the close proximity of Leeds Bradford Airport, major road and rail links add to the package.

`Senior managers from company headquarters in Germany, can fly in direct from Dusseldorf and the expanding number of routes serviced by the airport provide easy access for European visitors to the site,` he added.
