Beyond The Text Book

The Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL) together with Print- Packaging.com will organise the AIMCAL summer school in India for the second consecutive year. The previously called Summer School which is back for a second innings is called The Converting School and will be held prior to the India Converting Show from the 6th- 7th August, 2008 at Prgati Maidan, New Delhi. “The school received tremendous response from the industry the previous year. Scheduling the converting School prior to the main event gives the attendees the advantage of attending the lectures as well as the show,” says Anil Arora, President, Print- Packaging.com.

The Converting School will cover topics related to the subject of Web Handling and Converting. Web Handling and Converting focuses on the essentials that are required to understand most web manufacturing as well as converting machines such as coaters, laminators, printers, winders and so on. These must-know topics include rollers, controls, nips, spreading, slitting, wrinkling and winding. The course explains the fundamental physics behind web machinery operation to provide guidance on how to troubleshoot real problems using a range of measurement and analysis tools.

Course Outline
• Web Handling Laws
• Roller Rules, Design and Maintenance
• Tension Controls
• Nip Controls
• Temperature and Moisture Controls
• Guiding
• Spreading and Wrinkling
• Slitting
• Winding Introduction

Conducting the lectures will be Dr David Roisum from Finishing Technologies Inc who is a well-known authority on web handling and converting. Dr Roisum has authored several books including the newly published ‘Winding: Machines, Mechanics and Measurements’, as well as more than 100 papers and articles such as his monthly Web Works column in the Converting magazine. His background includes a variety of web manufacturing and converting experiences from being a machine designer and research manager for winders at Beloit Corp, a pilot lab setup at the Web Handling Research Centre to being an internal converting consultant to all business units at Kimberly-Clark. Now as an independent consultant, he helps troubleshoot problems in the paper, film, foil, non- woven and textile industries. He has visited nearly 1,000 plants during his 25-year career.

Course content combines theory with real-world problem solving and is tailored to the individual students present in each class. “The focus of these classes is productivity enhancement,” says Craig Sheppard, Executive Director, AIMCAL. “Students also will take home ideas for profit-boosting strategies related to process optimisation and waste reduction, as well as higher, more consistent product quality and new product development,” he adds. AIMCAL, which is an international nonprofit trade association, also includes a CEMA division focused on the interests of converting equipment manufacturers. The Converting School has been launched by AIMCAL forwarding these very interests to provide productivity-enhancing educational opportunities for members of the converting industry. Programme details are available on www.indiapackaginshow.com and www.convertingschool.com. Registration fee: Rs 12,000* per person.
