Food Safety Bill passed
Industry asks for dedicated Ministry of Food Processing Industries to be administered
The much-awaited Food Safety and Standards Bill 2005 reached its final destination at last as the Lok Sabha passed the Bill last week. However, it is still not decided which ministry will control the Food Safety Authority that has been proposed in the Bill.
The All India Food Processors Association has welcomed the move and expressed that now the food processing industry in the country will run under a single law. Earlier 16 separate laws were controlling the food processing industry.
`Last week we met food processing minister Subodh Kant Sahai and requested him to consider some issues so that the industry can be benefited. He has assured us there will be amendments even after passing the Bill,` P L Kaul, president, All India Food Processors Association, told a leading financil daily
He wanted the dedicated Ministry of Food Processing Industries to be administered like the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India under the ministry of Telecom. This Act has no relevance to the Ministry of Health and the miserable experience of the past 50 years of irrational PFA administration under the ministry of Health has stagnated the growth of food processing in the country to a meagre 2% as compared to 60%-80% in several developing countries. If we have to save our farmers from their economic agony, we have to increase our processing level and it is important that the Act is implemented in a rational manner.`
