Ranbaxy tops third world patents list.

Domestic pharma giant Ranbaxy Laboratories has landed itself on top position in the list of companies from the developing nations in filling patents.

According to the Patent Corporation Treaty (PCT) database, Indian companies have filed around 4,200 patents. Out of these 55% are for pharmaceutical innovations. Ranbaxy has filed 240 patent applications, of which 122 are for derivates, formulations, compositions and new dosage forms. Dr Reddy’s laboratories with 100 patents came a distant second to Ranbaxy.

Mumbai based company Sun Pharma, who is going global with large buyouts in US has filed around 100 patents while Cipla has filed around 50.Its move becomes significant because it has been opposing the patent regime and argued for an extension of the 2005 deadline to 2016.

Other Indian companies like Biocon, Aurobindo Pharma, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals etc have also increased their international patenting activities and moved up the PTC patent filing chart.
