Department of chemicals to be renamed ‘pharmaceuticals’

Those complaining about confusion over the administrative department for pharmaceuticals now get ready to welcome the draft pharma policy 2006. The policy plans to give the industry a renewed thrust by adding the word ‘pharmaceuticals’ in the name of the department.

The proposal is to change the name to department of chemicals, petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. There is, however, no change proposed in the name of the ministry the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers. `We plan to focus more on industry, and now it will also be reflected in the name,` says an official.

Also, the policy proposes to restructure the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), and formulate new norms for monitoring prices of drugs. At present, the authority books cases against drugs (under Drug Price Control Order’95), whose prices have increased 20% in a year.

There is also a proposal to set up an apex advisory committee in Delhi, and five regional committees under the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). The committees will be represented by state, industry and consumer representatives. The state health secretaries will also form a part of these regional committees.
