Roche Sues Ranbaxy Over Antiviral Drug
Prevents company from selling generic version of Valcyte

Roche Holding AG has sued Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd to prevent it from selling the generic version of antiviral drug Valcyte. Roche has claimed that the leading Indian drugmaker's proposed generic version of the drug, used for primarily treating eye infections, will infringe its patent that expires in 2014. Sales of Valcyte and a related drug called Cymevene reached 394 million Swiss francs ($318.7 million) last year.

Ranbaxy has been going strong on its para IV filing strategy (which challenges existing patents on drugs). It is involved in a few high profile cases like Pfizer's anti-cholesterol drug Lipitor – the world's largest selling drug -- and AstraZeneca's anti-ulcer drug Nexium. The company was recently successful in one such case – Merck's Zocor (Simvastatin) where it is likely to get a six-month exclusivity period.
