Steamed out.
India accounts for 27% of world production of tea, yet exports decline.
The world is sipping it and enjoying it too. Indian tea is hot property abroad and the demand continues to record increase, especially in US, Britain, Japan, France and Germany. The five countries alone imported 75% of India’s tea production of 3,500 tonnes last year.
A report by the World Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) stated that the tea production has reached a record of 3.2m tones, 75,000 tonnes more that ’02, as a result of favorable climatic conditions. India was the largest producer of tea with 27.4% of the total world output followed by China with 24.6% and Sri Lanka and Kenya with 9.75% and 9.4% respectively.
However, the total world exports reported a 2.6% decline as compare to ’02. Export increases in China, Sri Lanka and Kenya were not enough to offset major decline in export in India and Indonesia. Tea export from India fell by 13% due to fall in shipments to Iraq under ‘oil-for-food’ programme.
Despite record production, tea prices stood firm during ’03. The $1.48 per kg in June has increased to a $1.55 per kg in July to December.
