Pakistan to `milk` India`s dairy experience.

Pakistan has a thirst to know- how and it will quench it with a glass of milk from India. Come February 2005, a high level dairy delegation represented by Pakistan Dairy Association (PDA) in a tie up with the Strategic Working Group (SWOG) funded by USAID will visit India to sought it’s help in developing a model for milk procurement and processing. The delegation will also explore the possibility of importing dairy processing and packaging machinery from India.

The team also plans to visit some of the prominent dairy plants to study the co- operative system of milk procurement, health care management, balanced cattle feed and milk processing systems, particularly the pasteurized poly packing of liquid milk.

Pakistan’s interest in the Indian dairy industry comes as a surprise, since the annual growth rate of production of milk products and the per capita consumption of milk in Pakistan is higher than in India. However, GCMMF RS Khanna, who just returned to India from a weeklong trip to Pakistan, has a ready answer for this unusual situation. “The major issue with Pakistani plants is that they need to setup a rural network of procurement of milk that brings in unadulterated milk. This is a mojor problem and concern for processors.” Said Khanna.

70% of the milk total milk production is consumed by the rural sector and 30% by large cities and towns. 97% of the milk production goes to the non- formal sector while 2- 3% is processed.

According to Dr Khanna, while co- operation is not a word uttered with reverence in Pakistan, such a model has been adopted by one Idara-e-Kissan, which is selling pasteurized milk on a trial basis is posing a threat to big shots like nestle known as Milkpak Ltd across the border.
