Drugmakers shouldn’t pursue patents in poor nations: WHO
Drugmakers shouldn’t seek patents or try to enforce them in poor nations, the World Health Organization said in a report that makes recommendations to promote access to crucial medicines.
With a third of the world too poor to afford the drugs its citizens need, ‘‘we urge industry not to take out or enforce patents in developing countries’’ Ruth Dreifuss, who chaired the WHO report, told reporters in Geneva. ‘‘We’re not expecting pharmaceutical companies to convert into charitable foundations, our task is to create incentives for their work to be really useful to the poor.’’
