A new priscription for the drug policy.
Exsisting pharma rules to undergo change.

The existing Pharma policy is likely to undergo a change. The resulting changes would lead to particular disease prone areas as a criterion for price control, bringing non-schedule drugs under the ambit of price control and the beginning of the product patent regime from 2005. The change in the policy will take place keeping in mind health for the masses. The common minimum programme of the UPA government is seeking to bring costly drugs for diseases like Aids and Cancer under price control also.

Since only quarter of the Rs.250 billion Pharma market comes under price control the empowered committee will come up with a price ceiling and trade margin price ceiling for non- schedule drugs.

With sanctions for revamping by the high- level committee, set up by Ram Vilas Paswan, minister for chemical and fertilizer, the committee headed by G. S. Sandhu, joint secretary, pharmaceuticals is expected to make a recommendation soon.
