Food segment to see more action

As Godrej Industries Ltd (GIL) is planning to restructure its foods and tea business, ITC Ltd’s foods division is setting up its own factories to manufacture its brands at select locations across the country.

To start with, ITC Foods is setting up its first manufacturing facility in Uttaranchal. Till now, ITC Foods was outsourcing its manufacture.

On ITC’s new initiatives, ITC Foods chief executive officer Ravi Naware said, “We will be setting up our first biscuit manufacturing unit in Uttaranchal.

We chose Uttaranchal because there are excise concession there. After Uttaranchal, we will be adding one or more facilities by the end of this year.

“As part of its growth strategy, ITC Foods also plans to extend its product portfolio to cater to the varied needs of consumers, according to Mr Naware.

On the other side of the spectrum, Godrej is getting ready to restructure its foods business within the group-after the recent demerger of Godrej Foods from GIL.

“We have not hived off the division. It’ll continue to be within the Godrej group. We are going to restructure our foods and tea business in the next 2 to 4 months. After the relaunch of Godrej Tea, the brand is doing well,”explained Mr Godrej.

According to Mr Godrej, GIL is planning to launch larger formats of its retail initiative ’Aadhar’ which will also sell clothing and foot wear. “Last year, we launched ‘Nature’s Basket’ in Mumbai. We now plan to add on 100 such retail outlets in the next few years,” he added.

Yet another FMCG major Dabur Foods is also drawing up a fresh game plan to gain a competitive edge in the overcrowded category. On the company’s strategy, Dabur Foods general manager (marketing & sales) Sanjay Sharma said, “We plan to augument our manufacturing facilities this year. To pump up volumes, we have recently tied up with ‘Solutions Integrated Promotions.’ With this move, we host ground promotions to popularise our products.
Clearly, competition seems to be hotting up in the branded foods business as major players are drawing up fresh strategy to gain mind and market share.
