Dairy experts warn against artificial drug.

The National Dairy Research Institute through a joint paper written by Dr VK Batish and Dr Sunita Grover voiced it’s concern, over the use of artificial drug resistance markers in the production of genetically modified organisms, since foods prepared or derived from such organisms can pose serious health risks

The research also suggested that there was a need to replace this drug by some natural food- grade markers derived from lactic acid bacteria.

They paper went on to state that the application of engineered starters with such natural food grade vectors in food processing should not pose any problem in getting the approval of regulatory agencies and also the only concern in the public mind is whether food prepared for genetically modified organisms is safe for consumption.

However, the two experts agreed that biotechnology would play an important role in reshaping the dairy industry and thus make way for India in the global competition. This will add new dimensions to our economy by producing high quality dairy products, which are wholesome, nutritious and also safe for consumption.
