ITA ‘brewing’ trouble for Upasi.
Opposes plea of amending tea export rules.
“I don’t think it’s such a good idea at the present juncture.” CK Dhanuka Chairman, Indian Tea Association (ITA), was quoted commenting in a newspaper last week on the United Planters Association of south India’s (UPASI) plea to bring tea export under the domain of the Tea board.
Mr. AK Bhandari president, UPASI was also quoted saying that the board should have the powers to issue all mandatory certificate and also should have the power to decide on the type of certificate required for such exporters. However on the other hand Mr. Dhanuka felt that instead of authorizing the board to issue certificates, some other mechanism has to be formed to prevent the export of substandard tea by unscrupulous traders or merchants.
The suggestion came UPASI when on inspection tea stock meant for Libya were found to be of inferior quality. Incidentally Libya had banned Indian tea in its market due to substandard quality, however recently it has reopened its market due to assurance of quality. Similar complaints have been received from other countries also.
