Drug cos go for counterfeit- proof packaging tech
Use of RFID on the rise.
Though RFID tagged medicines is still in the distant future, some Indian drug makers like Ranbaxy, and Dr Reddy’s will soon have products with RFID tags in the US.
The advent of this technology is to a large extent dictated by large buyers like Wal- Mart. The technology, which is a more advanced version of bar codes and results, is greater cost savings in the long run by improving the efficiency of the supply chain.
According to Satish reddy, MD and COO Dr Reddy’s the company is in the process of introducing RFID for its exports of finished dosage formulations to the USA in order to comply with customer requirements.
Also Ranbaxy has introduced RFID as an effort to employ state of the art technology.
The USFDA has recommended the use of RFID as the best way to thwart illegal drug trafficking. With more and more Indian companies in the US market, it may be imperative for them to invest in new age technology and bring a lot back home.
